After 16 weeks of live music therapy, children with cerebral palsy participating in a study showed significant improvements in locomotor function, according to Spanish researchers. In the study, participants played small percussion instruments—a Spanish guitar, a keyboard, and drums, along with the therapists. Certain types of movements and skills, including hand movements, sensorimotor skills, load-bearing, head movement, and leg position improved after the therapy, researchers found. “Music therapy is a useful tool in rehabilitation and its positive effects remain four months after completing the treatment,” they concluded.
