Study: Non-invasive Brain Stimulation as Therapy for Cerebral Palsy

Non-invasive brain stimulation may improve coordination and motor skills of children with cerebral palsy, according to a study at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Researchers examined the impact of low-level electrical currents positioned on the scalp, which target specific areas of the brain. This study was the first to observe the technique as a therapy for cerebral palsy. Importantly, there were no serious adverse effects observed by the researchers during the study or during the six-months of follow-up. The study’s lead author Dr. Bernadette Gillick said, “…we have an opportunity to influence recovery through means we hadn’t before realized. This has potential to impact function across a child’s entire lifespan.” Researchers hope this pioneering study will support larger, more comprehensive studies in the future.
