Researchers investigated the impact of “clown-care” on children with cerebral palsy when receiving injections designed to alleviate muscle stiffness caused by the condition. The study, published in the journal PLoS One, suggests that the visits by specially-trained clowns alleviate anxiety and the perception of pain in young children. The researchers noted that the clown experience helped in both initial injection procedures and during subsequent injections without a clown present. The therapy could “…lead to better medical results and reduce the need for general anesthesia in children during medical examinations that require the cooperation of the child,” the researchers concluded.
