Published in the British Medical Journal in May 2016, research led by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine surgery professor Martin Makary suggests that medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the U.S., behind heart disease and cancer. Makary considered four large cause-of-death studies and concluded that medical mistakes leading to death, such as communication breakdowns, diagnostic errors, poor judgment and inadequate skill, number over 250,000 every year.
