Summer may already be over, but each sunny season campers trek out to Martha’s Vineyard to Camp Jabberwocky, a camp for the disabled. Founded in 1953, Camp Jabberwocky’s mission is focused on what campers can do as opposed to what they can’t, and has hosted hundreds of people with disorders ranging from Down syndrome to cerebral palsy. Campers go horseback riding, paddle boarding, mini golfing, and take dips in the ocean, and there’s no age limit on who can attend. “There’s a can-do attitude that I’ve never found anywhere else,” volunteer Leys Bostrom said of the camp, which operates mostly on donations and their annual 5k run fundraiser, which drew over 500 runners this year—including many of the 34 disabled campers.
