Study Suggests Benefits of Exercising While Pregnant

New research out of Thomas Jefferson University published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology suggests that regular exercise while pregnant contributes to fewer pregnancy-related health conditions and lowers the risk of having a medically necessary C-section. The research, which analyzed data from nine previous studies of over 2,000 women in total, also suggests that exercising while pregnant does not increase the risk of pre-term birth—which may lead to conditions like cerebral palsy. Furthermore, researchers note that women who did not exercise had a higher incidence of gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders when compared to those who exercised, underscoring the benefits of staying active throughout pregnancy.
