More than 14,000 letters and 3,000 packages have led to the happiest birthday for a terminally ill 9-year-old boy. When the parents of Bubby Everson, who contracted fatal cytomegalovirus at birth, called on the community to help them celebrate their son’s upcoming birthday, they did not anticipate the tremendous outpouring of support their card drive would generate. “We feel absolutely blessed. The amount of love from strangers is overwhelming and it fills our heart,” Bubby’s father commented,of the piles of mail coming in from all over the world. Bubby, who is also diagnosed with autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, scoliosis, and other conditions, is not expected to live into his teen years due to his rare condition. The family wants to make every birthday as special as possible for their son: “We take every day like it’s the last, because we don’t know when that’s going to be.”
