Minutes after Rachel Allen gave birth to her daughter Eliana in October 2016, the new family quickly learned something was wrong. Eliana was diagnosed with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, or HIE, a type of brain injury characterized by a lack of oxygen or blood flow that can lead to permanent disabilities. “It took doctors 10 minutes to get Eliana breathing,” Rachel said of the terrifying and shocking experience at the Minneapolis hospital where Eliana was treated.
Just before Thanksgiving, family members of the Allen’s hosted a community benefit to raise money for Eliana’s expensive hospital care. Over 300 people attended, bringing with them donations and baskets of goodies for a silent auction. The family continues to raise funds to offset the medical and other unexpected expenses since Eliana’s birth and looks forward to finally spending time at home as a family of three.
