Traveling for the Holidays with Cerebral Palsy

The winter holidays are often a time for families to get together and enjoy the spirit of the season. For families of a loved one with a disability, such as cerebral palsy, traveling to family events can be very stressful. Preparing early and getting your child excited about the upcoming trip may help make the journey less challenging. When driving, taking shorter “practice” trips, making frequent stops, and packing games and snacks can lead to a smooth trip. If flying, the airline’s special needs department may be able to help you obtain optimal seating and information about wheelchair policies. Additionally, TSA recommends checking with state laws regarding prescription labels and clearly labeling any of your child’s over-the-counter medications. Happy Holidays and Safe Travels!
