With March being Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, it made sense for Pennsylvania business owners Jeanna and Mark Mihalka to donate the proceeds from their annual charity golf tournament to Carol and Bill Hughes, whose son Billy has cerebral palsy (CP). Two-year-old Billy was diagnosed with CP and several other conditions shortly after his birth, when a blood clot in his umbilical cord inhibited blood flow and oxygen to his brain and vital organs, resulting in serious injury. While Billy is showing improvement in his therapies at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital in Allentown, expenses have mounted. The Mahalkas hope to raise at least $13,000 for the family through proceeds from the golf outing as well as T-shirt sales. Billy’s family is “extremely happy” to learn they were picked as recipients of the proceeds, which will increase awareness of CP in their community and nationally.
