In a shocking new report by USA Today finding that the U.S. is the “most dangerous place to in the developed world to give birth.” The article states that more than 50,000 mothers are severely injured during or after childbirth and 700 die every year in the U.S.
Perhaps most eye-opening is that, according to investigative reporter Alison Young, experts say that half of the maternal deaths related to childbirth could have been prevented if better medical care was administered. Young notes that the two leading causes of childbirth-related deaths are severe blood loss, or hemorrhage, and preeclampsia, or pregnancy-induced high blood pressure. If better monitored by physicians, these conditions could have been prevented in many instances. USA Today also offered a guide to help mothers advocate for themselves concerning these two leading causes of maternal mortality.
