Zofran Blamed for Allegedly Causing Cleft Palate, New Lawsuit Says

Another lawsuit has been filed against GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) over the side effects of their popular anti-nausea medication Zofran (ondansetron). Filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Montana, the Marlenne family is alleging that GSK’s Zofran (ondansetron), which mother Pam took during pregnancy to alleviate morning sickness, caused their baby’s cleft palate. The now 17-year old has undergone 10 surgeries to correct the cleft.

The family claims that GSK never warned them of the possible link between the drug and cleft palate, and that they only learned of the risks in February 2015, just one month before filing their suit. In fact, Zofran (ondansetron) has never been approved by the FDA as a safe and effective medication for use by expectant mothers, and is only indicated for chemotherapy patients or people who have had major surgery and are experiencing nausea symptoms.
